Let’s start this off with a bang:

Okay, now that that is out of the way we can get on with this amazing plush I got the other day. When I was able to get my Lion-O plush I was pleased as punch. I started to think that maybe a companion piece to Lion-O would be great. My initial idea was that I wanted to get Panthro because he was cooler than all of the Thundercats put together. The more I thought about it though I came to realize that Lion-O’s arch nemesis would be a better match. I e-mailed the wonderful artist Chelsea Bloxsom of Love & A Sandwich and asked her if she’d be down to attempt a Mumm-Ra piece. Lo and behold she liked the idea and almost immediately sent me a sketch for what she had in mind.

I was immediately struck by the picture as I hadn’t even considered the weak version of Mumm-Ra. You see, Mumm-Ra is normal a decrepit old mummy who is quite weak physically. He has to use a considerable amount of his magical energy to turn into the warrior Mumm-Ra. Here’s a clip of him doing his thing:

My idea for the plush was that he would be his kick-ass warrior self but I was intrigued by the mummy version. I asked Chelsea if she could do a mock up of his trsnformed version and she was down and again punched this out pretty quickly:

So now I had two awesome designs and I had no idea what I wanted. My original idea had been supplanted with the cool and somewhat subdued version of Mumm-Ra as a mummy. I then went to my friends who had some recollections of Thundercats and asked them who was the more iconic Mumm-Ra. I was thinking most people would say the wrapped up mummy version. Well according to the people in the know they said the version of him as a kick ass fighter was the one that they remembered. I then remembered that this made more sense as the original Mumm-Ra toy was the jacked up version while the hardcore fans of the show had to actually mail away for the mummy toy so he would have been less played with (btw apparantly LJN made a shit ton of these toys as they are easy to find still wrapped in plastic).

So after the consensus I agreed that amped up Mumm-Ra and the Lion-O I had would be the better match. Unfortunately I had an idea that occured after Chelsea had already started to make him which was to have him be double-sided with th mummy version hidden on his backside. Oh well, shit happens. So I let Chelsea know I was down for the version that I had originally envisioned. A few weeks later she sent me some work in progress pics:

I love how close to the original picture it is.

Well a few days ago I got the finished product and I have to tell you, holy shit. This thing is awesome as the Lion-O and now I’m fully hooked cuz I think I have to commit myself to getting even more.

I mean it’s pretty obvious to me that Mumm-Ra really just wants to cuddle with Lion-O. So now I’m debating again what I should get next. I’m leaning towards a scaled Snarf and Ma-Mutt but Panthro is seriously calling to me. Let me know what you think in the comments. Thanks again to Chelsea for her amazing art and go buy some of her stuff at her Etsy store.
